The Netball World Cup in Sydney runs from 25 August to 5 September 2027. That is twelve days of competition, which is short enough to change the visa strategy for every visiting squad. A tournament that fits inside three months can often be supported by a formal invitation instead of a full sponsorship. Choosing between those two routes is the first decision, and it shapes everything that follows.
Picture a fictional Caribbean federation. It plans a fourteen-day pre-tournament camp on the Gold Coast, then the Sydney fixtures, then a week of exhibition matches in Melbourne. That is roughly six weeks in Australia for twelve players, four coaches and three officials. The federation has no Australian entity and no prior dealings with the Department. The question it should ask first is who in Australia will put their name to the application.
Short answer: Players, coaches and officials use the subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa at $535 each, with $535 for an accompanying adult and $135 for a child. For a stay of three months or less, a formal invitation from an Australian organisation can replace sponsorship. Squads should confirm the tournament’s endorsed events status with the Department.
Invitation or sponsorship: the decision that comes first
The subclass 408 lets an Australian organisation take one of two roles. It can become an approved temporary activities sponsor, which involves its own application, a $420 charge and ongoing obligations. Alternatively, for activities of three months or less, it can support the applicants with a formal invitation and no sponsorship approval. Both routes lead to the same visa.
Suited to a squad arriving for the tournament and leaving within three months. The Australian host, such as the national body or a state association, issues a letter. It names each person, their role, the dates, the venues and who is paying. There is no separate sponsorship application. However, the letter must be specific. A generic welcome letter is not an invitation for visa purposes, and thin letters are a leading refusal reason.
Required where the stay runs beyond three months, for example a long pre-tournament residency followed by a domestic league season. The Australian organisation applies to become a temporary activities sponsor, pays $420, and then nominates the activity. Sponsorship approval lasts five years, so a body hosting several international squads over time applies once. Sponsors take on record-keeping and reporting obligations that invitation supporters do not.
For most Netball World Cup delegations, the invitation route fits. It is faster to assemble because there is no sponsorship step. Even so, the invitation must come from an organisation with standing in the sport. It must be signed by someone with authority to make the commitments it contains.
Who fits the sporting activities stream
The sporting activities stream covers people taking part in competition or high-level training. Players and coaches are obvious. Umpires, technical officials, team doctors, physiotherapists and performance analysts also qualify, provided their role directly supports the squad’s participation. Media staff employed by the federation do not. Depending on their duties, they belong in the entertainment stream or on a subclass 400.
The Australian Government Endorsed Events stream is a further option. It applies where the Government has formally endorsed an event and the organiser supports the applications. Whether the Netball World Cup 2027 is endorsed for your group should be confirmed with the Department before you rely on it. If it is not, the sporting activities stream does the job.
Family members travelling with the squad
Partners and dependent children can be included in a 408 application. Each adult adds $535 and each child adds $135. Included family members generally hold work rights. That matters little for a twelve-day tournament, but it matters a great deal for a coach on a longer posting.
Alternatively, family members can travel on their own visitor visa. An ETA or eVisitor is free for eligible passports, and a subclass 600 visitor visa costs $250 from outside Australia. Visitor visas carry no work rights and cannot be converted into a 408 dependant visa from inside Australia without a fresh application. Decide the family strategy before lodgement. Timeline for a squad arriving in August 2027
Processing times are published monthly by the Department and vary. The steps below are ordered by dependency, not by promised dates.
- Late 2026Confirm the Australian host organisation and the route: invitation for three months or less, sponsorship for longer. Lodge a sponsorship application now if the longer route applies.
- Early 2027Fix the itinerary: camp, fixtures and any exhibition matches. Draft the invitation letter with names, roles, dates, venues and funding.
- Autumn 2027Collect passports, health insurance certificates and character documents. Lodge the applications in a batch so the case officer sees the whole squad together.
- Winter 2027Respond to any health or further information requests. Prepare late replacement applications using the same invitation.
- August 2027Arrival. Check each grant notice against the passport and the planned entry date.

Because the invitation carries the weight a sponsorship would otherwise carry, it needs to answer every question a case officer would ask.
