Why Two Partner Visa Files Lodged the Same Week Finish Years Apart

Partner visa processing in 2026: how priorities and lodgement order work, where files lose time, and how to keep an $11,710 application moving.

Two couples lodge subclass 820 applications in the same week. Call them the Okafors and the Reyes. The Okafors lodge with medicals done, police certificates attached and evidence sorted under the four relationship aspects. The Reyes lodge the forms, a handful of photos and a note promising further documents. The Okafors’ file is assessed in one sitting when it reaches the front of the queue. The Reyes’ file sits, triggers a request, waits for the reply, and goes back into the pile.

Both couples paid the same $11,710 charge. The gap between their decision dates came from what was in the file, not from luck. This guide explains what actually drives partner visa processing, and what you can do about the part you control.

Short answer: Partner visa processing depends on the Department’s priorities, your lodgement date and the completeness of your file. No number you read online is a promise, but a complete application avoids the request cycle that slows files down.

What the Department publishes, and what it means

Home Affairs runs a global visa processing times tool. It shows how long recently decided applications took, reported at two markers. One is the time within which half of applications were finalised, and the other covers ninety per cent. The figures change monthly.

Two things follow. First, the tool describes the past, not your file. Second, the higher marker is the safer planning figure, because it captures the files that hit complications. We do not quote numbers in this guide, because they age within weeks. Check the live tool, and check it again before any decision that depends on it.

What sets the order

A ministerial direction sets processing priorities across the family program. Partner and dependent child applications sit near the top of that order, ahead of parent and most other family categories. Capping and queuing, which holds some parent visas for years, does not apply to partner visas in the same way.

Within the partner category, the Department generally works in lodgement date order. As a result, your lodgement date matters more than most applicants expect, and moving it forward by a month can matter. However, lodging early with a thin file only helps if the file can be decided when its turn comes.

Where files lose time

Cause Who controls it What to do
Missing health or character documents You Book medicals and order police certificates before lodgement
Request for further information You, mostly Lodge complete, then answer any request fully and before the deadline
Inconsistent dates or statements You Audit every document against every other before lodging
Departmental workload and priorities The Department Nothing, beyond keeping the file decision-ready
Changes not reported You Update address, contact details and relationship changes promptly

The right-hand column is the whole point. Three of the five causes sit with the applicant. A decision-ready file removes them.

The stages after lodgement

  1. LodgementThe charge is paid, the application is valid, and onshore applicants usually receive a Bridging visa A.
  2. AcknowledgementThe Department confirms receipt and requests health examinations if they are not already complete.
  3. AllocationThe file reaches an officer in lodgement order. A complete file is assessed here in one sitting.
  4. Request, if anyAn incomplete file may receive one request with a fixed deadline. The file then waits for the reply.
  5. Temporary grantThe subclass 820 or 309 is granted and the relationship must remain genuine and continuing.
  6. Permanent stageAround the two-year mark from lodgement, you provide fresh evidence and the subclass 801 or 100 is assessed.

What you can control

You cannot speed the Department up. You can stop slowing it down. Lodge complete evidence across the financial, household, social and commitment aspects. Include identity, health and character documents at the start. Respond the same week if an officer asks for anything. Keep your contact details current in ImmiAccount, and check it regularly so a request never sits unread.

Can urgent circumstances move a file forward?

The Department can prioritise a file that involves compassionate and compelling circumstances. It decides those requests case by case, so a request needs evidence rather than a description. A serious medical condition, a child’s welfare or a partner’s critical illness are the kinds of matters that have been considered. A request without documents is unlikely to change anything.

Onshore and offshore: the same rules, a different rhythm

Applicants in Australia lodge the combined 820 and 801 application and wait here on a bridging visa. Applicants outside Australia lodge the 309 and 100 application and wait offshore. Both pathways use the same evidence standard and the same charge. However, offshore files can move on a different rhythm to onshore ones, so never assume the two will report the same figure on the tool. Our partner visa page compares the two pathways in full.

Onshore applicants should also understand their bridging visa conditions during the wait. The bridging visas page covers work, study and travel.

Planning around the wait

Use the higher marker on the Department’s tool for budgeting and life decisions. Treat the temporary and permanent stages as separate events rather than one date. Keep building evidence through the whole period, because the permanent stage is assessed on whether the relationship is still genuine at that point. Frequently asked questions

Does the Department decide partner visas in the order they were lodged?

Generally, yes, within the partner category. The oldest complete applications are progressed first. A file that needs a request for information loses its place while it waits for the reply.

Does a request for information reset my place in the queue?

It does not formally reset anything, but the file cannot be decided until the reply arrives and is assessed. In practice, the request cycle is the single biggest avoidable delay. Lodging complete prevents it.

Do partner visas rank ahead of parent visas?

Yes. The ministerial direction on family visa priorities places partner and dependent child applications ahead of parent and most other family categories. Partner visas are also outside the capping and queuing that applies to parent visas.

Can I ask for my application to be prioritised?

You can, where compassionate and compelling circumstances exist. The Department decides case by case, and it needs documentary evidence of the circumstances rather than a description. Advice on how to frame the request is worthwhile.

What should I do while I wait?

Keep collecting evidence, report any change of address or circumstances, and check ImmiAccount regularly. Understand your bridging visa conditions before you work, study or travel. Save evidence monthly so the permanent stage is easy when it arrives.
