From the NHS, the Site or the Office: Matching British Careers to the 189, 190 and 491

Which Australian skilled visa fits UK applicants in 2026: 189 at $6,135, 190 and 491 at $6,140, plus job title, English points and trade traps.

Hannah is a 31-year-old NHS radiographer in Manchester. Callum is a 38-year-old electrician in Glasgow. Both are British, both want Australia, and both asked us the same question. The answers were different. Hannah’s route ran through a health registration body and a competitive 189 pool. Callum’s ran through a trades assessment, a state list and a regional visa. The passport was the only thing they had in common.

Short answer: British applicants use the same 189, 190 and 491 as everyone else, with charges of $6,135 and $6,140 for the main applicant. What differs is the mapping of UK job titles and qualifications. A UK passport also covers competent English but not the higher points bands.

This guide covers the traps that catch UK applicants specifically, then matches the three visas to typical British careers.

Three UK-specific traps

Your job title is not your occupation

Australia classifies work by duties, not by what your employer called you. A UK “site manager” may assess as a construction project manager, a building associate or neither, depending on what the role actually involved. Because the skills assessment fixes the occupation for every later step, this mapping comes first. It should be done with the assessing authority’s guidelines open, not from memory.

Your passport covers English, but only to a point

Holders of a UK passport are taken to have competent English without a test. That satisfies the visa requirement. However, it earns no points. Proficient and superior English, which do earn points, still require a test result. For a candidate close to the invitation line, those points can be the whole difference, so many British applicants sit a test anyway.

Your qualification is assessed, not assumed

A UK degree or trade qualification is well regarded, but the assessing authority still decides how it compares. Trades are assessed on evidence of skills and, for licensed trades such as Callum’s, are followed by state licensing on arrival. Health professionals go through their registration body first. Therefore, timelines for British applicants start with the assessment, not with the expression of interest.

Before you compare visas

Matching the visa to the career

The 189 is permanent, needs no state or employer, and lets you live anywhere. It suits British professionals in nationally listed occupations with a strong score. Hannah, with a health occupation, a high English band and years of experience, is a genuine 189 candidate. Even so, she keeps a 190 registration alive, because invitation levels shift between rounds.

What the visas cost in 2026-27

Estimated visa application charges$0

For the 189 the main applicant pays $6,135, adults $3,070 and children $1,540. Assessment fees, any English test, health checks and UK police certificates are additional. Charges are set in Australian dollars and change each July.

The employer-sponsored alternative

Some British applicants have an Australian employer ready to hire them before they have thought about points. In that case, a 482 visa can get them working sooner, with permanent residence through the employer later. It is the route we discussed with Callum’s colleague, who had an offer from a Darwin contractor. The trade-off is less freedom to change jobs, so it suits people who value speed over independence.

Is there a UK-specific working holiday route worth using first?

British citizens up to age 35 can use the Working Holiday visa to gain Australian work experience before a skilled application. Australian experience earns points and often places you in a state’s onshore stream. The visa is not a skilled pathway on its own, but it can strengthen one.

Why similar British profiles get different advice

Two engineers from the same firm can end up on different visas. One may have a partner with a skills assessment, adding points. The other may be 44, which makes timing critical because age is tested at invitation. One may accept Adelaide, the other may insist on Sydney. Consequently, the visa decision comes last, after the occupation, the evidence and the honest conversation about location. Our contact page is where that conversation starts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an English test with a British passport?

Not to meet the visa requirement, because a UK passport is accepted as competent English. You do need a test to claim points for proficient or superior English. Whether that is worth doing depends on how close your score sits to recent invitation levels.

Will my UK trade qualification be recognised automatically?

No. A trades assessing authority reviews your evidence and may require a practical or technical interview. For licensed trades, state licensing follows after arrival and is separate from the visa. Build both steps into the timeline.

Can my NHS experience count as skilled employment?

Yes, provided it was in your nominated occupation, after you became qualified, and is documented with references that describe duties. Some assessing authorities also require a minimum number of hours per week for the period to count.

Which parts of Australia count as regional for the 491?

Everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, the Gold Coast and Newcastle are all designated regional areas for this purpose. The Department publishes the postcode list.

Can my partner add points if they are not in a skilled occupation?

A partner with competent English alone adds a small number of points. A partner with a skills assessment in an eligible occupation and competent English adds more. Applicants without a partner receive the same small addition as those whose partner has competent English.
