The ICC Men's T20 World Cup runs from 21 October to 19 November 2028, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Squads, match officials, broadcast crews and fans move between the two countries during the tournament, so every visa has to survive a departure and a return. This page covers the Australian side and flags where New Zealand's rules also apply.

Players, coaches, team staff and match officials at the T20 World Cup 2028 use the subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa at $535 each, sponsored by the Australian cricket body or supported by the organiser where the Department endorses the event, and it allows re-entry after matches in New Zealand. Broadcast crews on short assignments use the subclass 400 at $535, boards and sponsors the 600 business visitor stream at $250 or a free ETA or eVisitor, and fans a visitor visa that allows multiple entries within its validity.

Every group at a co-hosted tournament carries one extra question: will the visa still be valid when the person flies back from New Zealand? For most it will, if the dates are set correctly at lodgement.
The subclass 408 in detail

Players and team staff: 408
The squad, coaches, analysts, physiotherapists, doctors and management use the 408 Sporting Activities stream, sponsored by the Australian cricket body or organiser, or the Australian Government Endorsed Events stream if the tournament is confirmed on the Department's list. $535 each, family members can be included.

Match officials: 408
Umpires, match referees and review officials take part in the competition and are 408 applicants under the same stream. The organiser usually sponsors or supports them as one group with one nomination.

Broadcast and technical crews: 400
Crews employed by an overseas broadcaster or production company on assignments of under three months use the 400 Short Stay Specialist visa at $535. Highly specialised, non-ongoing, with an employer letter instead of sponsorship. Subclass 400.

Boards, sponsors and corporate guests: 600 business visitor
Attending matches, hosting, negotiating and attending board meetings are business visitor activities. The 600 business visitor stream is $250; eligible passports use a free ETA or eVisitor. No paid work. Subclass 600.

Supporters: ETA, eVisitor or 600 tourist
Fans from eligible countries apply online for a free ETA 601 or eVisitor 651. Everyone else applies for the 600 tourist stream at $250. Both allow multiple entries within their validity, which matters when the group stage sends you across the Tasman. ETA and eVisitor.

Sponsorship approval, nominations and visa applications each take their own time. Health examinations and character checks add to it for some nationalities. New Zealand's requirements are separate and are not covered by any Australian visa.
Sponsor once, nominate the squad, set the dates for both legs.
A co-hosted tournament changes one thing in the standard 408 process: the nominated dates have to cover the whole tournament, including days spent in New Zealand.
Confirm the stream
Check the Department's list of Australian Government Endorsed Events for the tournament. If listed, the organiser's support can replace sponsorship. If not, the Sporting Activities stream with an approved sponsor covers stays to two years. Organisers should confirm this with the Department rather than assume it.
Sponsorship approval
The Australian cricket body, organiser or a partner club applies to be a temporary activities sponsor. $420, valid five years, so it also covers later tours and league imports.
Nomination with the full tournament window
The sponsor nominates the activity and lists each person, their role, the dates and who pays. The dates run from the first Australian arrival to the final, even if the squad is in New Zealand for part of it, so the visa stays valid for re-entry.
Individual applications, with New Zealand alongside
Each player, staff member and official lodges online with passport, health where required, character, health insurance and the nomination. Family members included at $535 per adult and $135 per child. New Zealand entry is applied for separately.
Arrival, departure and return
The 408 is a multiple-entry visa for its validity period, so flying to New Zealand and back does not end it. Work only in the sponsored activity and keep health insurance for the whole stay.

None of these is hard to avoid. All of them are hard to fix after the group is already in the air.
Australia's major events to 2032- 01
A single-entry mindset
The 408, the 600, the ETA and the eVisitor all allow multiple entries within their validity. The trap is the stay period, which restarts on each entry for visitor visas but must fit within the visa's overall validity. Set the visa validity to cover the last possible match, not the first.

Forgetting New Zealand
An Australian visa gives no right to enter New Zealand. Every person crossing the Tasman needs to meet New Zealand's entry requirements for their passport, and those requirements are separate, with their own charges. We flag it in every delegation plan; a New Zealand adviser handles the detail.

Staying on for the Australian summer
Players offered a Big Bash or state contract after the tournament need a new sponsored visa before playing, usually a fresh 408 or a 482 lodged by the club. Supporters cannot work at all. Ask before the tournament visa ends. Subclass 482.

What visa do T20 World Cup 2028 players need for Australia?
The subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa, $535 per person. The Sporting Activities stream needs an Australian sponsor such as the national body or organiser. If the Department lists the tournament as an Australian Government Endorsed Event, that stream applies and the organiser's support replaces sponsorship.
Does an Australian visa cover the New Zealand matches?
No. An Australian visa gives no right to enter New Zealand. Anyone crossing the Tasman needs to meet New Zealand's entry requirements separately, and should apply for both at the same time. The Australian visa must remain valid for re-entry, which is a matter of setting the dates correctly.
Can fans travel between Australia and New Zealand on one Australian visa?
The ETA, eVisitor and 600 allow multiple entries to Australia within their validity, so leaving for a match in New Zealand and returning is allowed. Each return starts a new stay period within the visa's validity. New Zealand entry is a separate requirement for the same trip.
Is the T20 World Cup 2028 an endorsed event?
The Department publishes and updates the list of Australian Government Endorsed Events. Organisers and boards should confirm the tournament's status with the Department before building the plan around that stream. The 408 is the visa either way; the stream changes who sponsors and how long the stay can run.
When should a cricket board lodge visas for the 2028 tournament?
Sponsorship approval by February 2028, nominations by May 2028 and visa applications by July 2028, as planning guidance rather than processing times. Squads arriving early for a lead-in series move everything forward by the length of the series.
Which visa do broadcast crews need for the T20 World Cup?
Crews employed by an overseas broadcaster on assignments of under three months usually use the subclass 400 Short Stay Specialist visa at $535. The work has to be highly specialised and non-ongoing, with a letter from the employer. Crews staying longer or employed by an Australian broadcaster need a different visa.
What if a player's 408 is refused?
An applicant inside Australia can usually seek review at the Administrative Review Tribunal within strict time limits, for a fee of $3,727. A refusal from outside Australia usually means fixing the sponsorship or nomination and lodging again, which is why the timeline needs slack.
