Netball World Cup 2027.Twelve days in Sydney, and the visas that getevery squad on court.
The Netball World Cup runs from 25 August to 5 September 2027 in Sydney. It is a compact tournament with national squads, umpires, technical officials, federation delegates and a travelling media contingent, most of whom arrive within the same fortnight. That makes the visa timeline short and the sponsorship step decisive.

Which visa do I need? A 30-second check
Answer the questions to see where you stand.
A guide only, not legal advice. The consultation is where the real answer comes from.
A netball delegation is smaller. The visa rules are not.
A typical national netball delegation is a squad, a handful of staff, one or two umpires and a federation party. The same four visas apply as at any world cup, with less room for late lodgement.
The subclass 408 in detail
- 01
Players, coaches and team staff: 408
The squad, head and assistant coaches, physiotherapists, analysts and managers use the 408 Sporting Activities stream, sponsored by the Australian netball body or organiser, or the Australian Government Endorsed Events stream if the tournament is confirmed on the Department's list. $535 each.
- 02
Umpires and technical officials: 408
International umpires, umpire coaches, bench officials and match review staff take part in the competition and are 408 applicants under the same stream. The organiser or the world body's Australian partner usually sponsors or supports them as one group.
- 03
Broadcast and technical crews: 400
Camera, engineering and data crews employed by an overseas broadcaster for the fortnight use the 400 Short Stay Specialist visa at $535. Highly specialised, non-ongoing, with an employer letter instead of sponsorship. Subclass 400.
- 04
Federation delegates and sponsors: 600 business visitor
Attending congress, board meetings, hospitality and negotiations are business visitor activities. The 600 business visitor stream is $250; eligible passports use a free ETA or eVisitor. No paid work. Subclass 600.
- 05
Supporters: ETA, eVisitor or 600 tourist
Fans from eligible countries apply online for a free ETA 601 or eVisitor 651. Everyone else applies for the 600 tourist stream at $250. Apply before paying for flights and tickets. ETA and eVisitor.
- 06
Test series and camps before the tournament: 408 with earlier dates
Squads that arrive early for a test series or a training camp are still on the 408, but the nomination must cover the earlier start date. Adding dates after grant means a new application, so plan the calendar before lodging.
Counting back from 25 August 2027.
Planning guidance from group applications we have run, not Department processing times. Processing times vary and are published monthly. Decision-ready applications move faster.

Sponsorship approval, nominations and visa applications each take their own time. Health examinations and character checks add to it for some nationalities. Start with the sponsorship.
Sponsor once, nominate the squad, lodge in one batch.
The 408 was built for exactly this: one Australian sponsor, one activity, a list of people. The compact schedule means the batch has to be complete the first time.
Confirm the stream
Check the Department's list of Australian Government Endorsed Events for the tournament. If listed, the organiser's support can replace sponsorship. If not, the Sporting Activities stream with an approved sponsor covers stays to two years. Organisers should confirm this with the Department rather than assume it.
Sponsorship approval
The Australian netball body, organiser or a partner club applies to be a temporary activities sponsor. $420, valid five years, so it also covers later test series and league imports.
Nomination and squad list
The sponsor nominates the activity and lists each person, their role, the dates and who pays. Final squads are named late in netball, so we lodge the wider training squad and withdraw rather than add.
Individual applications
Each player, staff member and umpire lodges online with passport, health where required, character, health insurance and the nomination. Family members included at $535 per adult and $135 per child.
Arrival and conditions
Work only in the sponsored activity and keep health insurance for the stay. A player signed by an Australian league club afterwards needs a new sponsored visa before playing.
What a Netball World Cup delegation costs in government charges.
Model a squad, its staff, an umpire pair, a broadcast crew and a federation party. Government charges only. Health insurance, police clearances and our fixed professional fee are additional.
As at 1 July 2026. Each field caps at twenty. One sponsorship covers every person the sponsor nominates, so the per-person cost is the visa charge alone.
Three things a netball delegation asks us every time.
The tournament is in one city over twelve days, which simplifies logistics but raises the same three questions.
Australia's major events to 2032- 01
Can the squad train interstate before the tournament?
Yes. A 408 covers all of Australia for the sponsored activity, so a pre-tournament camp in another state needs no extra visa. The nomination should describe the camp and its dates so the activity matches what the squad does.
- 02
Can a player stay on to join a league club?
Not on the World Cup visa. A league contract is a new sponsored activity, so the club lodges a fresh 408 or a 482 before the player starts. Talk to us before the tournament visa ends, not after. Subclass 482.
- 03
What about the Rugby World Cup a month later?
The Rugby World Cup starts on 1 October 2027, five weeks after the netball final. Supporters and media planning both events need a visa whose validity and stay period cover the whole trip, which for many fans is a multiple-entry visitor visa rather than two separate ones. Rugby World Cup 2027 visas.
Netball World Cup 2027 visas, answered plainly.
What visa do Netball World Cup 2027 players need?
The subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa, $535 per person. The Sporting Activities stream needs an Australian sponsor such as the national body or organiser. If the Department lists the tournament as an Australian Government Endorsed Event, that stream applies and the organiser's support replaces sponsorship.
Do umpires need the same visa as players?
Yes. Umpires and technical officials take part in the competition, so they are 408 applicants under the same stream as the squads. The organiser or its Australian partner usually sponsors or supports them as a single group with one nomination.
Is the Netball World Cup 2027 an endorsed event?
The Department publishes and updates the list of Australian Government Endorsed Events. Organisers and federations should confirm the tournament's status with the Department before building the plan around that stream. The 408 is the visa either way; the stream changes who sponsors and how long the stay can run.
When should a federation lodge visas for Sydney 2027?
Sponsorship approval by January 2027, nominations by March 2027 and visa applications by May 2027, as planning guidance rather than processing times. Squads arriving early for a test series move everything forward by the length of the series.
Can fans get a free visa for the Netball World Cup?
Fans with an eligible passport apply online for a free ETA 601 or eVisitor 651, allowing visits of up to three months. Other passports apply for the subclass 600 tourist stream at $250. Apply before booking non-refundable travel because grant is not automatic.
Can a federation delegate attend congress on a visitor visa?
Yes. Attending congress, board meetings and hospitality functions are business visitor activities allowed on the 600 business visitor stream at $250, the ETA and the eVisitor. Paid work for an Australian organisation is not, and needs the 400 or 408.
What if a player's 408 is refused?
An applicant inside Australia can usually seek review at the Administrative Review Tribunal within strict time limits, for a fee of $3,727. A refusal from outside Australia usually means fixing the sponsorship or nomination and lodging again, which is why the timeline needs slack.
