Structured trainingin an Australianworkplace, with asponsor behind it.

Three nomination types, stays of up to two years, a charge of $535. It suits registration training, structured upskilling and capacity building for overseas staff, and it is refused when the training looks like a job.

In two sentences

A sponsored visa for workplace-based training, not for work.

The subclass 407 Training visa lets a person take part in structured, workplace-based occupational training in Australia for up to two years. The main applicant charge is $535, an approved temporary activities sponsor must nominate the program, and the training must fit one of three nomination types: registration or licensing, improving skills in an eligible occupation, or capacity building overseas.

Verified as at 1 July 2026 against the Department of Home Affairs subclass 407 page and Schedule 2 of the Migration Regulations 1994.

Do I qualify? A 30-second check

Is there an Australian organisation ready to sponsor and nominate the training?
Which nomination type fits the program?
Does the trainee have at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation or a related field of study in the last 24 months?
Will the training run at least 30 hours a week with most of it in the workplace?
Does the trainee have functional English?

Answer the questions to see where you stand.

A guide only, not legal advice. The consultation is where the real answer comes from.

The three nomination types

Three types. The nomination has to fit one exactly.

The nomination type sets what the sponsor must prove about the training and what the trainee must show about their background. Choosing the wrong type is the most common reason a 407 fails.

Sponsoring trainees and workers
A supervisor working through a plan with a trainee
Training must be structured, supervised and mostly in the workplace
  • 01

Occupational training for registration or licensing

Workplace training the trainee needs to obtain registration, membership or a licence to work in the occupation, in Australia or in their home country. Supervised practice for overseas-trained health professionals is the classic case.

  • 02

    Occupational training to improve skills

Structured, workplace-based training in an occupation on the 407 list. The trainee needs at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation, or a related field of study, in the last 24 months. At least 30 hours a week, with most of it on the job.

  • 03

Occupational training for capacity building overseas

Three sub-types: practical training required to complete an overseas qualification, training supported by the trainee's home government, and professional development for overseas managers and professionals. Delivery rules differ for this type.

  • 04

    What is not training

A job with a training label, unpaid labour, or a classroom course at a college. If the person fills a vacancy and produces output like an employee, the Department treats it as work and refuses.

  • 05

    The training plan

Every nomination needs a plan: objectives, structure, supervision, hours, who delivers it and what the trainee can do at the end that they could not do at the start. We write it with the sponsor.

How a 407 comes together

Sponsor, nominate, then apply.

Three separate applications, in order. Sponsorship approval is the step organisations forget to allow time for.

  1. Sponsorship approval

The Australian organisation applies to become a temporary activities sponsor for $420. Lawfully operating, a genuine training capacity, no adverse information. Approval lasts five years, so an organisation that trains regularly applies once. Commonwealth Government agencies can sponsor without a nomination.

  2. Nomination

The sponsor nominates the trainee and the program under one of the three types and pays the nomination charge. The training plan, the supervisor, the hours and, for the skills type, the occupation and the trainee's experience are assessed here.

  3. Visa application

Lodged online with identity, functional English, health, character, health insurance, funds and genuine temporary entrant evidence. Applicants inside Australia need a substantive visa that does not carry condition 8503. Charges are $535, $535 per adult and $135 per child.

  4. Grant and conditions

Train only in the nominated program, keep health insurance, tell the Department of changes. The stay matches the program, up to two years. Family members can be included and have limited part-time work rights.

Training sits next to work, study and research. This is how we choose.

For the sponsoring organisation

What a training sponsor signs up to.

Temporary activities sponsorship carries obligations that last for the trainee's stay. They are lighter than standard business sponsorship but they are monitored.

  • 01

    Keep the training on plan

The trainee must only take part in the nominated program. Moving them into ordinary work, or changing the program without telling the Department, is a breach for the sponsor and a visa problem for the trainee.

  • 02

    Records, notifications and inspectors

Keep records of the training, tell the Department when the program ends early or changes, and cooperate with inspectors. Sponsors who breach obligations can be barred from sponsoring again.

  • 03

    Pay and workplace law

A trainee can be paid. Where the training involves productive work, Australian pay and conditions apply. The sponsor cannot recover sponsorship or nomination costs from the trainee.

  • 04

    When the 407 makes sense

Group companies training overseas staff, franchisors training operators, hospitals and firms bringing overseas professionals up to Australian registration. If the aim is to keep the person, plan the 482 from the start.

Common questions

Subclass 407, answered plainly.

How long can I stay on a 407 visa?

Up to two years, set by the length of the nominated training program. The Department grants what the program needs, not the maximum. A further 407 is possible if a genuine new program is nominated.

Can I work on a 407 visa?

Only as part of the nominated training. You can be paid for productive work done within the program, but you cannot take a separate job. Family members included in the application have limited part-time work rights.

Do I need a sponsor for a 407 visa?

Yes. The Australian organisation must be approved as a temporary activities sponsor, which costs $420 and lasts five years, and must nominate the program. The exception is a Commonwealth Government agency, which sponsors without a nomination.

Which occupations qualify for a 407?

The occupation list only applies to the skills improvement type, where the occupation must be on the 407 list and the trainee needs 12 months of recent experience. The registration and capacity building types are assessed on the purpose of the training instead.

Can I apply for a 407 from inside Australia?

In most cases yes, if you hold a substantive visa that does not carry condition 8503. Applicants on visitor visas with a no further stay condition, and people without a substantive visa, need advice before lodging.

Can my family come with me on a 407?

Yes. A partner and children can be included at $535 per adult and $135 per child. They can study and have limited part-time work rights. Everyone needs health insurance for the whole stay.

Does the 407 lead to permanent residence?

Not directly. Many trainees use it to obtain Australian registration and then move to a 482 with the same employer, which leads to the 186. Plan the pathway before the training ends so no one runs out of visa.
